However, many of the perceived benefits of cabinet refacing—lower cost, quicker turnaround time, less labor costs —are just not the reality. What is Cabinet Refacing?
Cabinet refacing is the process of entering your home with a low-cost labor crew and toxic stripping agents to remove the existing finishes on your cabinet box exteriors, doors, and drawer fronts. Then, toxic adhesives are introduced into your home’s environment to attach new wood or laminate veneers to your existing cabinets. Then installed is the new (or the reused) doors and drawer fronts after they’ve been bathed in an unknown toxic cocktail of chemicals to refinish them. Finally, the new handles and knobs are installed.
Other considerations when considering cabinet refacing:
- Lead - If your home was built prior 1978, the finish in and around your cabinets likely contains lead. Sanding or disturbing this finish, if it isn’t done carefully and by professionals with the right training and equipment can result in toxic lead permeating your food preparation area.
- Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are the most expensive component of a kitchen cabinet. If you’re replacing doors and drawer fronts, you will still be left with old, obsolete, sometimes nasty drawer boxes, deteriorating cabinet shelves, and dingy cabinet interiors.
- Refacing does not change the structure or layout of your cabinets, for example. If you are unhappy with the arrangement of your current cabinets or the available storage, refacing will not address these issues. Likewise, refacing does not reinforce the structural stability of aging cabinets.
- Refacing will never duplicate the quality of a factory finish where dedicated robotic finishing booths use a positive statically charged finishes which cure in ovens.
Refacing is essentially placing lipstick and toxic perfume on a pig.
